Blue Tits
28th May 2009

I have been keeping my eye on a nest of blue tits for the past week. I have been waiting around for about half an hour a day waiting to see when they fledge. Last week I saw a couple of squirrels where I thought the nest was, and as squirrels sometimes eat chicks I was a bit concerned, but today my daily check proved fruitful as some of the youngsters had fledged, and the adults were still feeding as well. I think there must have been a couple of nests quite close together. Anyway, I was waiting around with my camera (finally giving my new lens a test) and this is one of the shots I was able to capture. It wasn't easy as I was in an unbelievably awkward angle and knelling on stones for the best part, but nobody said this wildlife photography lark was an easy business!!!

The resulting shots are not actually of a fledgling, but certainly a younger blue tit, which seemed to be hanging around the same nest.

We had a bird cam in our nest box this year and have watched a pair of blue-tits raise 7 out of 8 chicks. This morning, we found that all seven had flown the nest. Despite careful searches of the garden and listening for their call, we have not been able to locate the chicks.
