badger cull

If you are a lover of wildlife then please take a closer look at this petition. The Welsh government have given the go-ahead to a badger cull, in an effort to reduce bovine TB.

Personally I feel this is wrong. There is no scientific proof that this will have any positive effect on the control of bovine TB, they have simply been used as a scapegoat to satisfy those who want something done. And rather than tackle the real problem in hand, which is modern farming techniques and high density stocking rates of cattle, the government have passed this cruel and unnecessary treatment of badgers to satisfy the bloodlust of those who agree with it.

Hi Kris

I've signed this petition as well as the one against the cat and dog 'trade' in China. As regards Bovine TB, I studied a great deal of the literature on the subject for my zoology degree back in 1994, and the findings seemed to suggest that there were indeed 'hotspots' of bovine TB in various parts of the country (mainly the south and west of England) and that badgers were susceptible to it. MAFF tried to say that TB was prevalent where there were high concentrations of badgers and that they were acting as a reservoir for the disease but, whilst this was true, what was not publicised was the fact that these areas all had the most intensive dairy farming in the UK....ie. high concentrations of dairy cattle! I felt that this was significant and should've been taken into account. One study suggested that the badgers were contracting the disease through foraging for worms under cow pats in areas where the disease was prevalent any way...ie from cows which were infected anyway. I felt that badgers were being used as a scapegoat to mask the fact that the disease had arisen as a result of intensive farming techniques and bad animal husbandry. Controversial topic, I know, but I just had to get my tuppence worth in there lol.

Thanks for this great site Kris.

Peace and harmony to you all.

Doug
